Chemical Peel 101

Chemical peels are liquid solutions formulated with active ingredients applied to the face, neck, or hands. The solutions work by exfoliating the skin to remove damaged skin cells, leaving behind a fresh new complexion.

Chemical peels treat a range of skin concerns, including:

  • Damage From Excessive Sun Exposure

  • Fine Lines and Wrinkles

  • Texture

  • Acne/Acne Scars

  • Hyperpigmentation

  • Redness/Rosacea

Formulating each chemical peel treatment is a unique process tailored to specific skin needs.

Types of Chemical Peels

There are many different brands and types of chemical peels available. Generally speaking, they are categorized based on intensity level.

Superficial Peels – Considered the lowest intensity, superficial peels are an ideal option for those receiving treatment for the first time or those with sensitive skin.

These peels exfoliate the top layer of the skin (also known as the epidermis) and contain gentler active ingredients like glycolic acid or lactic acid.

Medium Peels – Considered middle-of-the-line intensity, medium peels treat more stubborn concerns such as sun damage/sun spots and acne scars.

While these peels also target the surface layer of the skin, they also absorb deeper into the upper layers of the underlying dermis. Medium peels also typically contain higher levels of active ingredients like glycolic acid.

Deep Peels –
The most intense option, deep peels completely transform the skin while treating concerns such as severe sun damage and heavy wrinkles.

These peels target the innermost layers of the dermis and typically require considerable downtime with an extended healing period. They may contain highly active TCA or phenol formulas known for their strength.

While each type of peel provides some degree of effectiveness, a medium or deep chemical peel will offer the most dramatic results overall.
